Inventor, artist, scientist, and all-around Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci had this painting of St. John the Baptist in his possession when he died. It is the last image he produced and one of a select few that we can be certain was made by his own hand. It portrays St. John the Baptist, emerging from the shadows, shaped with soft delicate tones. Da Vinci’s use of chiaroscuro and sfumato really shine here. Somewhat androgynous and seemingly well-fed, this image differs substantially from the typical portrayals of John the Baptist being made in that time period. Interestingly, experts believe that the faint animal skin garment and wooden cross were added in later by another painter. This hand reproduction in oil on canvas makes available to you one of the world’s most priceless works of art.
